LUCY ROGERS-SMITH

My work is a reflection of my deep love of life and nature, embracing living in the moment, which is intrinsic to my practice.

For me, art is a special language that transcends words, allowing me to share and express my perspective on life and the world around us using my visual language of colour, line, marks, and symbolic shapes. I believe that colour has the power to evoke strong emotions and can be used to express intangible aspects of our world.

Approaching my art with an intuitive spirit, I often paint to the rhythm of music, allowing bold marks and positive words to flow freely without planning, and responding purely to the moment, while working on a series or multiple paintings simultaneously.

I enjoy working with a variety of media, including acrylics and oils, and incorporate various drawing materials, allowing the initial marks to progress through conversational layers and responses. This approach enables me to develop my paintings, often drawing back through wet paint to reveal what lies beneath - hidden treasures waiting to emerge.

The process is a delicate balance of spontaneity and precision. Over time, the paintings begin to tell me what they want to become, as they evolve into a dance of colour. It’s a playful, contemplative process that embraces the joy of discovery and the freedom of expression.

I like to think that the viewer can feel that, as in life, I wear my heart on my sleeve on the canvas, too! 

I work from my home studio in Blackpool, on the Fylde Coast, surrounded by my wildlife garden, which is like an ever-changing painting in itself, and a continual source of inspiration.
